You can find a bevy of different museums and historical sites throughout Old Town, including the Whaley House Museum and the Casa del Rey Moro African Museum.

Food options are wide and varied, though the main course in Old Town is Mexican food. The neighborhood is home to some of the best Mexican restaurants in the city. Visit Café Coyote for fresh, handmade tortillas warmed right on the patio griddle, or head to Barra Barra Saloon for some Mexican staple foods set in a cozy, authentic saloon. Top it off with a trip to Pollo a la Crema where the master bartenders can make you the perfect cocktail using a collection of over 100 tequilas.

For shopping, don’t expect any malls or big name brands. Stores sprinkled throughout Old Town offer true authenticity with handcrafted trinkets, candy, clothes, and more, all depicting the beautiful art and tradition of Mexico.

Schools in Old Town

The small population and general absence of families means that there is just one school in Old Town. Served by the San Diego Unified School District, Old Town Academy Charter School teaches kids from kindergarten through the 8th grade. The school offers a tightknit school setting that is personalized to each child’s needs. However, those looking for public elementary schools can find several, like Barnard Elementary School, in nearby neighborhoods.

High school students may attend nearby schools, including Mark Twain High, Point Loma High, and Alba High.
